Summary/Abstract: The Book of Genesis contains a chain of stories about brothers starting with murder and leading to forgiveness. In the relationships between Cain and Abel, Esau and Jacob, Joseph and his brothers, people of today recognize themselves and also their world, which is filled with violence and which cannot give an alternative answer to violence other than repeating it. The author examines whether mankind will ever be able to put into practice what the Bible teaches. The Church has the mission to be an effective sign of this alternative, which is embodied in the ultimate model of unconditional forgiveness and reconciliation: Jesus Christ.
