Summary/Abstract: The first half of the article is an overview of the fruitful first period of activity of the language committee of the Mother Tongue Society, from 1969–1972. Afterwards, other language committees began operating and the Society’s language committee remained largely unnecessary until the 1990s. In 1993 the committee was recreated, thus beginning the second period of its activity (continuing up to the present day), which is described briefly in the article, referring to previously published overviews. Instead of repeating these, the article focuses on the discussions of initial letter orthography through the years, beginning with the correction of the orthography of so-called indeclinable adjectives and ending with a clearer set of rules, as published in the 1994 “On initial letter orthography and quotation marks” and its subsequent supplements. The activity of the committee has always been founded on the results of the study of Estonian and on language planning theory.
