Summary/Abstract: The activity of the Library of the Primate Higher Seminary in Gniezno is closely connected to the functioning of the Theological Seminary, which was established on November 26, 1602 by the foundation act issued by Archbishop Stanisław Karnkowski, Primate of Poland. At the beginning of the seminary library activity its collections were developed mainly through donations of successive Primates of Poland, bishops and canon priests of the Primate Chapter. Throughout the centuries, the library faced moments of development, related to the purchase of new books, changes in location and collections rearrangements, but it also challenged moments of difficulties (i.a., the library was almost completely destroyed during the Swedish Deluge in 1655, and during World War II the Nazis occupied the seminary, setting up a police school in its premises). Nowadays, the book collection consists of approximately 55,000 books stored in the main stacks and 5,000 volumes arranged thematically in the reading room. The library has over 800 journal titles, 70 of which are still subscribed.
