Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is the exposition of the interest and ideals that are shared by pragmatism and feminism. It achieves this in two steps. First, it investigates the roots of philosophical pragmatism in order to throw light on the interconnections between early pragmatist ideas and feminist movement ideals. The philosophical conceptions of C.S. Peirce, W. James, J. Dewey, J. Addams, and R. Rorty are exposed. In particular, the mutual intellectual influence between Dewey and Addams is discussed. Second, it tries to answer the question about which philosophical tools provided by pragmatism have proved useful for pragmatism so far and which are likely to become useful in the future. Specific mention is made of rejecting dualisms, taking a perspective stance, developing values from concrete experiences, democracy as the spirit and foundation of social life, and appreciation of the role of education.
