Summary/Abstract: The article presents the role of family farms in the development of rural areas in Poland. The analysis has shown that Poland is an excellent example of how a comprehensive rural development policy can lead to a successful modernisation of agriculture. The study of the stages of the formation and current state of family farming in Poland enabled the author to outline key factors of its development. It has been established that a family farm has interre-lated functions: commercial-production, social, environmental, cultural-civilisational, and set-tlement-rural. It has been proven that family farms are a dominant driving force behind rural development and the formation of food and environmental security and socio-economic sta-bility in Poland. The mechanism for managing agricultural development, in line with the European Union’s (EU) Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), is based on the key factors of sustainable rural de-velopment: economic, social, and environmental, which ensure improved farmer welfare and socio-economic stability, environmental protection, and humane treatment of livestock. A con-cept of rural development was proposed, based on the development of family farming, which made it possible to take into account not only the principles of the market mechanism but also to reduce the anthropogenic impact of man on nature and to contribute to the achievement of socio-ecological balance.
