Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes contracts and property as legal institutions that appear in the Hebrew Bible, which through customary and written norms created a framework for concluding and fulfi lling contracts and for the administration of one’s property. The norms brought order, predictability, and justice to interpersonal relations, and at the same time contributed to the subsistence of society. The laws of contract and property lead to respect for the Lord and to mutual solidarity, particularly between individuals who have possibilities and means and persons who are in need and on the margins of society.
