Summary/Abstract: The article historically traces the process of establishing the piano accompaniment in dance lessons (late 19th century) and especially in classical dance lessons (ballet exercise – early 20th century). The changes in the characteristics of the piano accompaniment in the dance lesson, according to available notated sources from these stages (the appendix to the Musical Score of the Grammar of the Art of Dancing by Friedrich Zorn, 1905, and notated by memory from Launitz accompaniments of the ballet pedagogue Nikolai Legat from the 1920s and 1930s) are also considered. Zorn’s Grammar and Legat’s musical practice are being explored as a keystone in the differentiation of a very significant and specific segment in the art of accompanying – the one of ballet exercises.
