Role and Significance of Figured Bass and Specific Characteristics in its Realisation

Summary/Abstract: The article reviews the problems related to use of figured bass as a manner of writing down accompanying part. The author gives his own definition of figured bass. Functions carried out by the part basso continuo are defined and clarified in details from modern perspective – both as an important constructive part of the musical texture during the age of Baroque, and in the process of performing old music. The sphere of potential performers of basso continuo is shown, and certain instructions are given to the performers on keyboard instruments. Attention is given to complication and diversification of the accompanying part in view of turning the latter in a position, equal to that of the solo part. Attached is also a table with the digital markings as per a tractate by Johann Mattheson.
