Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the variable balance between the views on contest and concordance (agreement/co-operation) in the process of understanding the word concerto as a genre concept. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, an extensive historical reconstruction has been carried out, which traces the very first evidences of musical uses of the word concerto – still devoid of any connotations as an implicit and specific genre or form – up to the final establishment of the concerto as a virtuosic, instrumental genre in Vivaldi’s oeuvre, intended mainly for soloist(s) and ensemble, usually set in a three-movement structure, which consists predominantly of ritornello forms.
