Summary/Abstract: There are some social roles that people have in the social structure. It is expected that people have to act in accordance with their roles and responsibilities so as to have a peaceful and happy life in the society. Alike, in the family, which is a smaller structure than the society, there are social roles and responsibilities that spouses have and are obliged to fulfill. The problems that individuals experience in fulfilling their roles and responsibilities can lead up to the emergence of domestic violence. Act of violence among spouses in the literature is defined as “partner violence”, and partner violence is substantially done by men. In some studies in the literature, it is stated that women sometimes tend to partner violence against men. In this review, ıt was mentioned that the social roles of the spouses, the concept of violence, the source and causes of violence, the common violence among the spouses, the types of partner violence, the relationship between the social roles of women and men and the partner violence, and finally the physiological and psychological effects of violence. Since the family institution is the smallest social institution that makes up the society, partner violence primarily causes the family structure and subsequently the social structure to break down. For this reason, it is important to conduct studies which is intended for the types, causes and dimensions of partner violence in society . It is thought that, with the increase of research within the scope of this study, it will contribute to the awareness of the society on this issue and to minimize partner violence.
