Summary/Abstract: We aim to analyse, comment and interpret the evolution and changes in Goya’s work, as his paintings reflect his own vision of the era by his being politically engaged and inspired by the contemporary ideas, an age full of contrasts and tremors. The method employed is the general-rhetoric analysis initiated by Antonio García Berrio, Teresa Hernández Fernández, Tomás Albaladejo and Francisco Chico Rico, in an interdisciplinary approach and considering the rhetoric range of Goya’s period as well as later ones. The phenomenon characteristic of his evolution and work is the visible rupture and his polymorphic personality and fluid which synthesizes the nature of the age – from Baroque to Roman Classicism and Neoclassicism to Romanticism to the Impressionist and avant la lettre Expressionist formulas. Furthermore, the themes exhibit contrasts, the specific characteristics of Romanticism and his individuality. Hence, the contrasts and interferences are natural to his paintings and the transition from Academism to Neoclassicism and Romanticism occur in a natural manner and the early occurrence of modern elements are not unusual. To conclude with, the study, analysis and interpretation of Goya paintings lead to a confluence of movements, orientations and different techniques that characterise a work difficult to classify, a work that transcends the artist’s era and opens new horizons.
