Performance Analysis of Deposit Banks in Turkey by Using VIKOR Method

Summary/Abstract: Purpose – This study has been conducted to evaluate and compare the financial performance of the public, private and foreign deposit banks operating in Turkey. Design/methodology/approach – As one of the multi criteria decision making methods, VIKOR method has been used in this study. Derived from balance sheet and income statement of banks, 14 different financial ratios relating to capital adequacy, liquidity, profitability and asset quality have been evaluated in this study. Findings – In the study, a total of 25 public, private domestic and foreign deposit banks operating in Turkey between 2016-2018 have been analyzed. In the light of calculation of the average of these tree years concerning to financial performance of these deposit banks operating in Turkey, Deutsche Bank has been found to be the best that attained the first place in ranking. Following Deutsche Bank, Akbank has been in the second place. Then İş Bankası came in the third place in ranking. Discussion – It is observed that banks that are successful in performance ranking have relatively superiority to other banks, especially in capital adequacy, liquidity and profitability ratios, and that banks that are not successful are behind other banks in rates related to their active quality, which is one of the most important indicators of bank efficiency.
