The Church Music Archive of the Institute of Art Studies: History, Systematization, Research Aspects

Summary/Abstract: The paper reviews the history of creating, systematizing and cataloguing of the Church Music Archive. Today it is part of the Music Archive of the Institute of Art Studies (at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences). The present exposition is aimed towards a comprehensive description of the Archive as well as supplementing the available information on the Institute’s scholars who made the recordings and specified the recorded music genre. The three subdivisions of the Archives, i.e. the Sound Archive, The Church Music Catalogue and the Documental Archive have been presented. The emphasis is on the specificities of the archival material. There is an analysis of its importance and its role as a basis for scholarly studies as well as the main trends within that context.
