Summary/Abstract: For many years the leading ideologist in Bulgaria was the Marxist philosopher and Politburo member T. Pavlov. However, among other Bulgarian philosophers and most intellectuals Michaltschew exercised much greater authority. So Pavlov used the political situation to attack him, arranging a “discussion” at which D. Spassov, E. Panova (authors of this text), and others would criticise Michaltschew’s treatise. The utter “debacle” of the work, as staged by T. Pavlov, is highly representative of that time: most of the accusations were ideologically inspired: “this claim is not true because it is not Marxist,” “this is an idealistic logic, but the only true logic is the materialistic one,” “the Rehmkean philosophy of Michaltschew is one of the bellicose idealistic philosophical theories whose most prominent enemy is the philosophy of Marxism, … [it] has fought against Marxist philosophy,” “he is the fiercest enemy of materialism,” “it is impossible for a scientific theory of knowledge not to coincide with the T. Pavlov’s Marxist-Leninist theory of representation,” “A desperate attempt on the part of an old, reactionary ideological influence to deliver a slap”, “imperialistic philosophy,” “how hapless these indictments seem in the light of the new party documents, and the historic report delivered by Comrade Malenkov at the 19th Congress of the CPSU...”
