Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses Joyce's narrative strategies in his early works. These strategies share with Joyce's later narrative protocols the lack of an epistemological anchor or centre. However, in his later works it is semantic dissemination and hypermnesia (Derrida) which create the semantic indetermkinacy. In his earlier works semantic indeterminacy is created by procedures that can be described as negative epiphanies or gnomons.
