ONE TOPONYM FROM PROCOPIUS’ LIST OF FORTIFICATIONS IN MACEDONIA

Summary/Abstract: The etymology of the name of the fortification Babas registered by the Byzantine historian Procopius in the 6th century AD is discussed. Jovan Kovacevic was first who identified the name of the fortification Babas with the Slavic oronym Baba. Vladimir Georgiev also claimed its Slavic origin. According to our opinion, due to the many registered analogies, the name of the fortification Babas is epichoric, from the root *Baba “stone, rock, cliff” and belongs to the old, Pre-Greek linguistic stratum, probably Phrygian.
