Summary/Abstract: Recently, many studies have been carried out on the name, establishment, administrative and socio-economic structure of cities in Anatolia within the scope of local history studies. Most of these efforts strive to add a surplus value to the city by taking the city's history as far back as possible. It is possible to see this reflex in studies on the history of the Gumushane city. However, this reflex can sometimes cause misinterpretations about the establishment of the city and the civilization it belongs to. Until now, the lack of precise and clear information about the establishment of the city of Gumushane has led to different opinions on the considered subject. As the foundation of the city is concerned, some writers and travelers claimed that the city was founded by Greeks or Romans. However, it is understood that the information given by these people about the establishment of the city is based on deductions rather than historical evidence. However, considering the testimonies of travelers passing through the region throughout history, the way the city was established, its architectural structure and the obtained archaeological remains, one may conclude that the Gümüşhane province was founded and developed during the Ottoman period.
