Summary/Abstract: This study addresses civil solidarity practices within disaster management - one of many points of discussion points in the literature of the sociology of disaster – in the context of the 6.9 magnitude earthquake at struck Seferihisar, Izmir, Turkey on October 30, 2020. Disaster management demonstrated how civilians responded to those in need after the earthquake took place. It also revealed what measures were taken by relevant state institutions and the units affiliated with these institutions, including their intervention and recovery practices. Unique to this particular disaster were: the use of social media, NGO aid (especially in the districts of Bornova and Bayraklı), quick volunteer search and rescue teams response, as well as hotels and hostels – independent of any NGO or a civil platform – offering free accommodation to those left homeless. Also observed were civilians and volunteer groups handing out various supplies (food, tents, blankets, etc.) to the affected, and offering their own homes upon sharing their contact information on social media. All this data is parallel to civilian response/recovery practices in disaster management literature. All of the above have been examined within the framework of theoretical context as well as certain documented case studies.
