Summary/Abstract: The paper on Ljudevit Vukotinović, Croatian Romanticist, who was active from the thirties to the sixties in the nineteenth century, follows his prolific and versatile literary career in the critical reception. Even though he was a prominent artistic and cultural phenomenon at the time of the Croatian national revival, and is considered the pioneer of a range of expressive forms (short love poem, short story, ballad, tragedy, essay, feuilleton) in the renewal of his national literature, his work has not, in general, survived the strict aesthetic criticism of Anton Barac. None of the later critics could seriously confront his criticism, even the more inclined critics just tried to determine his place in the cultural history and his time (Olga Šojat, Nikola Batušić, Dubravko Jelčić) stressing that his essays, feuilletons and several lyrical texts written in kajkavian are the most valuable part of his literary legacy.
