Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the characterization of the identity of a non-democratic regime, from its founding (1949) until a pivotal event for this political system – the building of the Berlin wall (1961). The text draws on concept of authoritarian regimes by J. J. Linz. Specifically it focuses on the individual axes of the regime, and thus on the degree of political pluralism (monism – limited pluralism), ideologization (ideology – mentality), and political participation (mobilization – depolitization), according to the classical typology of J. J. Linz. The principal aim is to help answer the question of what type of political regime the German Democratic Republic represented during these years.
