Summary/Abstract: Fear is one of the basic human emotions. However, it is also a culturally defined phenomenon. Byzantines, as well as the other medieval societies had their own fears. They were frightened by natural disasters, wars, God, ’barbarians‘, punishments, etc. Avaro-Slavic invasions in the Balkans (VI-VII cent.) caused various reactions among the local population. The fears by ’barbarians‘ were particularly noted by the authors of the hagiographical deeds, The Miracles of Saint Demetrius. The proposed scenes of fear are analyzed and discussed in order to illustrate the certain discursive practices, cultural norms and social behavior in the time of great political, social and cultural changes in the Balkans.
