Summary/Abstract: Raymond Williams, one of the most important members of the British School of Cultural Studies, has produced important works on culture, social change and technology. Williams developed a sophisticated Marxist Theory of Culture and on the other hand he tried to criticise - and created an alternative to - cultural elitism. Williams’s cultural theory is an alternative to cultural elitism and his theory of technology is critical of both technological determinism and liberal naivism. His theory is based on the idea that technology and culture are both social realities that might not be explained through one single factor. In this article, Williams' contributions to communication and cultural studies are analysed. The article claims that Williams' theoretical approach to culture and technology is in harmony with his democratic ideals. It is also a search for hope against pessimism and that is why it still needs to be discussed today.
