Summary/Abstract: The earthquakes that occurred in Damascus and Sidon province in 1759 were parts of serial disasters that the locals had not encountered for a long time. Famine, drought, earthquakes, the rising cost of living, and the plague epidemic in 1760 were perceived as a torment sent by God to the Muslims and non-Muslims in the region. Two major earthquakes in 1759 led to the destruction of many villages and the collapse of public buildings, especially in cities. The scholars of the period who witnessed these disasters devoted a few pages to the earthquakes in question. The testimonies of the witnesses of the period regarding the earthquake of 1759 as well as the following renovation efforts of the Ottoman Empire are the main subjects of this study. The scale of the damage and the reactions of the people are depicted by focusing on Jerusalem, Damascus, and Sidon.
