Summary/Abstract: Satirical columns by Sava Skarić, or “zembiljs”, as he called them, were published every Saturday in Sarajevo daily Srpska riječ from 1906. To 1909. They are an unique example of melding literary talent and journalistic sharpness, and with their freedom of spirit and speech, in a humoristic and satirical way they witnessed social and political issues of the period. This paper, a shortened version of master thesis defended at Faculty of Philosophy Sarajevo in 2014., investigates topics and literary techniques of Skarić’s columns, and analyzes the role of the satire in his time and today. Through selected examples, author investigates the way Skarić uses allegory, synechdohe, personification and word play, as well as different techniques of estrangement and fictionalization of events in town. Paper also analyzes how narrative in Skarić’s column works and how he integrates anecdote and epistle in the narrative, along with recognizable humor and irony.
