Ciborium: Its Origin, History and Typology of its Forms

Summary/Abstract: In ancient civilizations, it was considered that the deities reside on the thrones under the ciborium. The flourish of art activities, inspired with the recognition of Christianity by emperor Constantine in the 4th century, was not devoid of antique heritage and influence. In the light of this, the place of Christian ciborium can be found. In this paper, author briefly discusses the origin, the history and the place of ciborium in church architecture.
