A Renaissance project of a Geography dictionary of Bulgarian lands

Summary/Abstract: This study searchs for an answer to the question of what the word .homeland. meant to the Bulgarians under Ottoman rule. The analysis is focused on a comparatively large but as yet unstudied corpus of texts: namely, about 130 descriptions of population centres printed in various periodicals. Those data are compared with the visions of the geography textbooks and the press, which asserted the image of the Balkan Peninsula as the scale on which the homeland is imagined. Two main questions are posed: 1) what are the points of difference / coincidence between the local and the national visions for territorial identity; 2) how did the alternative points of view interfere.
