Summary/Abstract: This essay investigates the problem of the hero in the works of the Chilean author Roberto Bolaño (1953-2003) in the context of the degraded world, ancient heroes, and the evolution of the novel form. In the “Introduction to the Problems of a Sociology of the Novel” Lucien Goldmann describes this genre as “the transposition on the literary plane of everyday life in the individualistic society created by market production”. According to the Romanian philosopher, the development of the form of the novel is homologous to the evolution of the society. Inspired by the work of Goldmann, who tries to describe the stages of the novel’s evolution in different phases of capitalism, this essay aims at reading the works of Bolaño as representative of global capitalism. Bolaño’s texts are juxtaposed with various writings analysed by Goldmann, in order to offer a deliberation on the subjects of the “problematic hero”, his “degraded quest”, and the relationship between the author and the reader, invited to join said quest, in the works of the Chilean author.
