Summary/Abstract: This article offers an overview of the origin, history, and current state of the text of the anaphora of Addai and Mari, which is one of the most ancient Eucharistic prayers. It compares its structure, which was preserved in its original form by the Assyrian Church of the East and the structure in the liturgical texts of the Chaldean and Syrian-Malabar Catholic Churches. What sets them apart is the absence of a narrative institution of the Eucharist in the original text. The absence of a narrative institution is replaced by the so-called quasi-narrative resp. anamnesis and epiclesis, which refer to the events of the institution of the Eucharist during the Last Supper. The absence of the narrative institution is not a deficiency, but rather a language and a symbol by which the whole anaphora must be read as one integral and complex consecration prayer not ad litteram, but as a lex orandi of the believing community. Possible reasons for omitting the narration and the words of the institution of the Eucharist are given toward the end of this essay.
