Summary/Abstract: The article provides an outline of the main contributions to the study of the communist penitentiary system in Romania between 1945-1964. It includes data on the organisation of the prisons in Sighet, Făgăraş and Gherla and relies on information odrawn from the records of the the Archive of the National Administration of Penitentiaries in Jilava. The same archival holding, contains tens of thousands extant photocopied penal transcripts of records. These are to be found in the Archive of the International Centre for the Study of Communism, the Sighet Memorial (the “Academia Civică” Foundation in Bucharest), and provide an overview of penitentiary detention.
