Summary/Abstract: The Dictionary of the Romanian Language (DEX) defines the term “debate” as thorough analysis, talk, deliberate, open discussion about general concern issue. Debates imply group work. At the very beginning two teams are created, that is the yes-group and the no-group. The team of evaluators is also formed. Documentation may last one-two weeks and this involves investigating a bibliography that is directly connected to the research theme. The teacher has the role to monitor this. The group builds the arguments and the role of the teacher is to coach the discussion. The debate should end up in a paper or a portfolio so that all the students might use the acquired knowledge. In my opinion, the alternative textbooks that are available at the high-school level unfortunately offer themes of debates that do not arouse the students’ interest. We can give as an example the debate “Romania between the East and the West”. We have noticed that the visible results at the end of this theme refer just to the acquired skills regarding organizing and participating to a debate and not to the assimilation of useful information. The Critical Literature File is a way to develop techniques of intellectual work and it presupposes gathering material regarding a literary issue.
