The East Slavic Service for St. John of Rila (19 October) as an Adaptation of Byzantine Hymns for St. Macarius of Egypt (19 January) and Other Saints

Summary/Abstract: Тhe article focuses on a special version of the Service for St. John of Rila, represented in East Slavic manuscripts of the 16th–17th centuries and in printed editions (Moscow, 1645; Kiev, 1671). Some of its stichera are also present in South Slavic manuscript copies of the Service for St. John of Rila, while many other hymns have been borrowed from translated Byzantine compositions, originally intended for other saints: Macarius of Egypt (January 19; canon, 2 sessional hymns, 1 photagogikon, and 1 sticheron), Anthony the Great (January 17; 3 sessional hymns and 4 stichera), Sabbas the Sanctified (December 5; 3 stichera), John the Baptist (June 24; 1 sticheron), Joel the Prophet (October 19; 1 sticheron). The text of these hymns remained almost unchanged, and their heirmoi and automela were preserved. These borrowings were due to the same saint title of a venerable man (three sources) or the identical name (one source), while a single hymn from the prophetic service was borrowed more or less accidentally. The readdressing of these Byzantine hymns to John of Rila must have happened (probably in Rus) in the 15th century (but prior to 1462) while using a special version of the Service Menaion, whose time and place of origin remain unknown.
