Summary/Abstract: The frequent contextual dependence between the adverb tam ‘there’ and the invariant relative marker deto allows the application of the model of grammaticalization of notional to functional words to the development from the locative subordinator kàdeto ‘where’ to a relative marker „that“. The hypothesis for a predictable path of development of deto precludes the need to refer to contact influence from Greek. The analysis of examples from spontaneous speech is not syntactic but focuses on the pragmatic motivation for grammaticalization towards relativizer and complementizer. A number of typological parallels with other languages are drawn. The conclusion is that deto carries the implicature of shared information/ familiarity. The original context for the grammaticalization is the world of discourse experienced phenomenologically as space, hence the interpretation of locative identification as referential and ultimately as a marker of familiarity in relative clauses and elsewhere.
