Summary/Abstract: The Corona crisis brought about various explanations all over the world, which try to denythe danger of SARS-CoV-2, to demonize precautionary measures and vaccinations and tosee an alleged “world conspiracy” or “world dictatorship” around Bill Gates, among others. These views are commonly referred to as “conspiracy theories”. While for the Global Norththe restriction of freedom rights, a “dictatorship” and a “coup d’état” are discussed, one ofthe main arguments for the Global South is that protective measures against the spread ofthe virus lead to an unprecedented starvation. The article deals with this argument usingthe example of the socio-economic conditions, the health situation and the differentcorona policies of governments in Latin America and tries to turn the cause-and-consequencerelationship between hunger and pandemic on its head. It deals with threegroups of countries in Latin America, which firstly ignore the virus, pursue a Laissez-fairepolicy and in which the death and infection rates rose exponentially (Brazil, Mexico), secondly, which carried out strict protective measures, but did not intercept them sociallyand thus the virus rose exponentially (Colombia, Chile) and thirdly, those countries thatcushioned protective measures with social aid and were able to successfully reduce infectionand death rates despite a difficult economic situation (Cuba).
