Summary/Abstract: Ceremonial wedding tunes, called svadobné nôty, were sung during the traditional wedding ceremony in Slovakia, usually a cappella by women, at specific moments of the wedding sequence with context-appropriate texts. Through village women᾿s recollections of the wedding repertoire and ceremonial wedding practices of the past, the functions are explored that svadobné nôty may have played in the traditional village life before and during the socio-economical, and cultural transformations that took place in Slovakia in the course of the twentieth century
