Summary/Abstract: The article highlights the amendments to the Commercial Act in the area of bankruptcy introduced from July 1st, 2003. The new provisions on the grounds for initiating insolvency proceedings are thoroughly analyzed, a conclusion being made that they significantly differ from the model previously established in the Bulgarian law. A criticism is drawn also on the rehabilitation of the debtor via a capitalization of the debts as a possible outcome from the proceedings. The reforms in the activity of the receivers and the other bodies within the insolvency proceedings are also presented. The remaining minor amendments are also critically analyzed, some suggestions for their improvement being formulated. Attention is also paid to some of the initial proposals in the government bill that were not accepted by the National Assembly.
