Summary/Abstract: Eastern Roman Emperor Alexios I Komnenos requested wage soldiers from the West to build a large army to expel the Turks from Anatolia. Pope II Urbanus, who wanted to turn this demand into a great opportunity and become the sole leader of the Christian World. Urbanus, on the other hand, called for the Crusades on the grounds that Christians in Jerusalem were persecuted by Muslims. Crusader counties were established in important strategic regions such as Urfa, Antakya and Jerusalem at the end of the 1 st Crusade made upon this call. However, Sultan Selâhaddin Eyyubî succeeded in entering Jerusalem on October 2, 1187 after the Battle of Hattin and ended the crusader rule that lasted for 88 years. This situation caused a great shock and fear in the West. Thereupon, Pope VIII Gregorius for capture of Jerusalem. A new crusade was called by Gregorius. The kings of Germany, France and England responded positively to this call. However, the German King Friedrich Barbarossa died on the way and his armies disintegrated. The kings of England and France, on the other hand, were able to embark on the expedition four years later due to the disagreements between them. Crusaders in the east continued their struggle to recapture Jerusalem. Meanwhile, on the way to Jerusalem, Akkâ, an important port city, was tried to be captured by King Guy. However, although Sultan Selâhaddin had initially fought against the crusaders to protect the city, he couldn't achieve success against the crusader armies that got stronger with the help of the kings of France and England, and the city of Akkâ was captured by the crusaders again.
