Church in Contemporary Secular Serbian Society

Summary/Abstract: Secularity is one of the basic postulates of contemporary democratic societies. The consensus regarding the essential determination of this conception, or the final implications it has on social relationship, still does not exist in theory nor in practice. Although the notion of secularism is not fully elaborated or defined, modern society is, not without reason, taken to be post-secular. The relationship between churches and religious communities is particularly burdened with misunderstanding in post-communist countries including Serbia, due to twofold tendencies which occur in those countries. Since both churches and religion communities were oppressed for decades, the downfall of communist dictatorship was followed by an understandable need for religion to assume its position in society. There are a lot of contrary opinions and practices regarding the position of religion. The aim of this article is to point out existing problems and to give solutions for their overcoming in the future.
