Summary/Abstract: This paper gives a brief overview of the history and situation of the Islamist opposition in Egypt before the Arab Spring. It shows that pro-democratic Islamists were the main opposition force in Egypt even before the developments of 2011. Two factors contributed to that: Islamists‟ systematic socio-political activism and failures of other political options. Prior to 2011, the legal position of the Islamists depended more on the nature and policies of the Egyptian regime than on their own democratic credentials. The paper also traces the development of extremism in Egypt as well as the historical process of deradicalisation of Al-Jama‟a al-Islamiyyah after 9/11. It concludes that June 2013 military coup threatens to radicalize again those Islamists whose loyalty to democratic processes has been strongly shaken by the coup.
