Summary/Abstract: The discussion about cultural heritage versus developmenthas been touched upon in many publications, andthe role of cultural heritage is being deployed increasinglyinto transforming mere development efforts into efforts forsustainable development. By analysing recent literaturewhich indicates the need for facilitation of cooperationbetween authorities and local communities, the theory ofownership and value of cultural heritage, and the closerelationship between heritage protection and sustainabledevelopment, the article aims to discuss the role of thelocal community in managing monuments. The most relevantconclusions include the link between the protectionof cultural heritage and the improvement of the quality oflife of residents, their sense of identity and more durablebonds with the place of residence and the strife towardthe achievement of local, sustainable development goals.
