TOWARD A HISTORY OF THE OLD BULGARIAN WORD СЪЦѢГЛЪ

Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on some new examples of the use of the adjective съцѣглъ and the adverb съцѣглъ previously unrecorded in lexicography. They are extracted from the Slavonic translation of the second book of the Panoply Dogmatic, which appeared on Mount Athos in the very beginning of the 15th century. The translation itself, as well as the manuscripts containing it, needs to be subjected to a future study; therefore, the examples of their archaic lexical content are of special value. This specific evidence attests to the semantic transformation from съцѣглъ – динъ, особъ, μόνος to съцѣглъ – хоудъ, тьнькъ, неꙗсьнъ, ἀμυδρός. According to this indicator, the translation of Panoply Dogmatic shows the greatest closeness to the translation of the Triodion Sinaxaria of Zacchaeus, the Philosopher “from Zagora,” proven to have been carried out on Mount Athos by the 1370s. The Athonite men of letters introduced into usage a layer of ancient Old Bulgarian vocabulary, although with changed meanings. This semantic change has survived in today’s Bulgarian dialect words циглив, цигл’ав, цигул’aв. A link in the semantic chain is thus being filled, with no gap between modern Bulgarian dialects and the literary Middle Bulgarian medieval language.
