Summary/Abstract: Both the traditional and contemporary grammar of the Arabic language give comprehensive and clear views about the place, role and numerous meanings of prepositions in the Arabic language. Compared to grammar books of some other languages, grammar books for Arabic language offer a more detailed exposition for prepositions within the chapters on particles. Nevertheless, language use, both verbal and written, provides a daily register of many mistakes in using prepositions. Drawing from some recent linguistic research of this phenomenon, but also from the author’s own experience in teaching Arabic, this article is trying to mark the most common causes of erroneous uses of prepositions and to give typical examples of their erroneous use. Sufficient reasons for the frequently made errors in the use of prepositions are the multiplicity of meanings of each of the twenty original Arabic prepositions and the partnership of several prepositions. Furthermore, relying on the language practices of the mother tongue or some other western language and “literal approach” to understanding and translating is another common mistake.
