Summary/Abstract: The article offers a classification of dominant trends in contemporary Islamic thought and practice on the basis of the five criteria, namely the five big themes which have preoccupied contemporary Islamic thought: 1) Authoritative knowledge and its custodians, 2) the place of Islam in public life, 3) response to the dominance of Europe/the West, 4) attitude towards liberal values, and 5) the question of the Muslim world’s backwardness. The article presents the most important ideas about each trend and identifies their representatives and works within the space limit of the article. It concludes that the contemporary Islamic scene in Bosnia is pluralist, but centrist or moderate in its orientation (wasaṭiyyah). The article ends with a warning about the danger of (ab)using this or similar classifications for the purposes of labelling opponents who hold different ideas
