Summary/Abstract: The era of general globalization and internationalization has neutralized the spatial distances between people so that learning foreign languages, especially so-called world languages, has become a necessity faced by almost all the inhabitants of the World. Although independent and institutional learning of foreign languages differ in many ways, they also share some common features, in the first place the fact that in both cases motivation plays a key role. While in independent learners motivation determines how intensively they will dedicate themselves to mastering a foreign language and how long they will persist in it, when it comes to institutional learning the intensity, dynamics and continuity of activities devoted to learning a foreign language also depend on other program contents and space necessary for their adoption. The aim of this paper is to point out the most common motives for learning foreign languages, as well as the role and importance of continuity and dynamics in this process.
