Summary/Abstract: The present article explores the main constitutional features of Unitarianism in theoretical and comparative legal perspective. The forms of territorial distribution of power are compared on the basis of their fundamental values as well as structural, institutional and functional prerequisites. Special emphasis is put on the description and evaluation of the unitary state with and without local self-government as well as on unitary states in which also regionalism, autonomies and devolution exist. These latter forms of hybrid Unitarianism have been qualified as functional federalism. Finally, the article outlines the main advantages as well as possible deficiencies of the unitary state.
