Summary/Abstract: The goal of the present study is to explore the psychological dynamics of two self-conscious emotions experienced by Celestina – shame and guilt. Since in guilt it is not the self but rather the thing done that receives negative evaluation, guilt may be considered an adaptive emotion promoting prosocial behaviour. By contrast, shame is seen as maladaptive and self-deprecating, leading individuals to avoid the shame-eliciting situation and to hide from other people. By trying to gain insight into the way Celestina copes with these emotions, the present paper aims to unveil the identity reconstruction process undergone by Rojas’s heroine.
