EXPANSION OF APPANAGES IN THE VOLOGDA PROVINCE IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF THE XIX CENTURY

Summary/Abstract: Appanage property existed in Russia for 120 years; during the period from 1797 to 1863 it included state peasants. The issue of the expansion of appanage property both in the country as a whole and in its separate regions is poorly studied, particularly concerning the period of existence of the category of state peasants. The analysis of the identified archival documents shows that in the first thirty years of its existence the Appanage Department bought three noble families’ estates in the Vologda province. In March of 1804, it conclulded the largest deal in the province by purchasing the patrimonial estate of Princess V. A. Shakhovskaya. Thus, the Department significantly increased the number of state peasants in the Solvychegodsk uyezd and created possessions in the Veliky Ustyug uyezd. Due to the purchase of F. Sokolova’s estate in the same year, the Department tripled the number of its peasants in the Vologda uyezd. After purchasing Prince Shcherbatov’s estate in 1824, the number of appanage settlers in the Kadnikovsky uyezd increased almost fivefold, and two new appanage volosts (administrative districts) were formed in the Gryazovets uyezd. The purchased estates not only increased the appanage property in the Vologda province, but also introduced some changes in the life of the appanage village. The materials presented in the paper actualize the need to identify and study all cases of purchasing land and peasants, including such cases in various regions of Russia.
