Summary/Abstract: This article is an attempt to explain why publishers were reluctant for many years to publish the works of Waldemar Bawołek, while recently we can observean increased interest in the work of this prose writer. This text aims to answer two fundamental questions.First of all, how could Bawołek’s writing develop ina deep niche for a number of years? Second, what hadto change in the reception of his work in order to gainrecognition from publishers? The answer is sought,on the one hand, in reading Bawołek’s writing asa kind of existential project, a spiritual exercise thatcan take place without the participation of the audience, and on the other hand, in placing the evolution of the reception of this prose writer’s texts in the contextof the so-called ethical turn in literary criticism.
