Summary/Abstract: In the gallery of Bukovinian personalities, the name of Ernst Rudolf Neubauer is related to a rich cultural activity, being known as a teacher and writer, but especially as a pioneer of journalism in Bucovina.Ernst Rudolf Neubauer was born in Iglau, Moravia, on April 14th, 1822, into the large family of Kaspar Vinzenz Neubauer and Anna Soupuch. He studied religion, mathematics, Latin, natural sciences, physics, universal history and philosophy. After graduation, at the request of his father, he enrolled at the Faculty of Law of the University of Vienna. In 1848, Neubauer participated in the revolutionary demonstrations between March 13 and 17, enrolling as a volunteer in the Guard of the Academic Legion, Corps of Lawyers, Company I. Later Neubauer arrived in Bukovina, as a substitute teacher at the High School in Chernivtsi, where he taught German , history and geography for the upper course, and Greek for the lower course of the Gymnasium. Neubauer integrates, at the beginning, in the teaching staff, proves seriousness and concern for teaching. On April 1, 1853, he gave a lecture at the Gymnasium on the difficulties faced by a German language teacher in a province with several nationalities and several spoken languages, such as Bucovina, and made proposals for the improvement of the education system. He supported the activity of many companies and associations in Chernivtsi and was actively involved in cultural events, especially theatre. Since 1862, under a contract with the Ministry of Public Instruction, Neubauer has also worked as a journalist, as the founder and editor-in-chief of the first German-language newspaper in Bukovina, entitled “Bukowina. Landes- und Amtszeitung” and his literary supplement “Sonntagsblatt”, which were first printed in Johann Eckhardt’s printing house and later in his own printing house. In 1874 Neubauer was appointed director of the State High School in Rădăuți, where he asserted himself as an excellent pedagogue and was permanently involved in the proper functioning of the institution’s activity. He is the founder of the Teachers’ Library (Lehrerbibliothek), contributing a donation of 250 books and periodicals. He wrote lyrics and prose, collaborated with various periodicals and promoted young talents from Bucovina in the literary field.
