Witold Lutosławski and Tadeáš Salva

Summary/Abstract: Tadeáš Salva (1937 – 1995), on account of his rich compositional work, is regarded as one of the foremost figures in Slovak music during the second half of the 20th century. Salva is one of that generation of composers whose creative formation occurred in the second half of the 1950s, referred to as the Slovak musical avantgarde. He was the only one of that group to study composition in Poland, which at that time was among the main centres of development of the New Music. Here Salva, as well as studying at the Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Muzyczna in Katowice also benefited from external consultation in Warsaw with one of the leading personalities of Polish music, Witold Lutosławski. For Salva, his musical work became a notable source of inspiration, especially in connection with the application of Lutosławski’s compositional technique of limited aleatory.
