Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with abbreviations as a word formation process in textese. Many people, especially the youth, like to use different abbreviated forms of lexical items when chatting via SMS or online. The aim here is to find some instances of this phenomenon and classify them according to their morphological features. The data was collected from a poem written in textese and published by The Guardian in 2001. The analysis includes the examination of the data based on two different types of categorization, the first one modeled after David Crystal’s classification and the second one based on orthographic versus phonological distinction, as created and modified by several authors. This paper shows that there are numerous ways of abbreviating words in textese, and even though it may be presumed that textisms are illogical, they actually do follow some rules.
